Matthew 5:1–2
“And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,”
The wisdom of the Sermon on the Mount cannot be overstated. Even in the verses leading to it, we can see the wisdom of our Lord at work.
Jesus had a multitude of followers by this time, and His eyes were constantly upon them. These multitudes were a mixed bag. Many were there for the miracles they had seen. Some were there for the benefits. Some were simply caught up in the excitement of it all. And there were those whose hearts were burning within them for love of this traveling preacher.
Around the name of Christ there have always been multitudes. Today, multitudes name the name of Christ—some for fame, some as fire insurance, others in hopes He’ll help them in their time of need, and still others whose hearts are truly in love with Him.
Jesus found a place where He could address them all. The mountain elevated Him above the crowds and allowed His voice to carry farther than it otherwise would. Christ is still elevated in this hour. His teachings, His words, His gospel are still going throughout the world. He was raised up on Mount Calvary. He was raised up from the grave. He was raised up into heaven—elevated above the multitudes. And what a platform He has found to address all who would call themselves disciples.
His words will comfort some, convict some, even chase away some, it will always accomplish what he has sent it to do. “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:11)
Christ took the initiative, but the disciples had a part to play as well: “His disciples came unto him.” If you would like to have His wisdom poured into your life, then come to Jesus. He has been lifted up. He is seated in a place of authority—now come, and come often.
When you have questions…come.
When you have burdens…come.
When you have sin…come.
Jesus has promised us, “him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” (John 6:37)
“And he opened his mouth, and taught them.” The climb was worth it! When they arrived where Christ was, He opened His mouth and changed the course of their lives. The meek were encouraged. The weak were strengthened. The mourners were comforted. His sermon touched the life of every person in attendance—comfort, courage, conviction, even chastening—and all of it was preceded by disciples coming to Christ.
No matter the Terrain, Won’t you come to Him today?
